A.R.E. vs. Leer: Which Truck Topper Is Right for Your Rig?
Share
Two Great Brands, Different Strengths
If you've been shopping for a truck topper, you've probably already run into A.R.E. and Leer. They're the two most recognized names in the category and between them they cover the majority of what most truck owners need. But "which one is better" is the wrong question — the right question is which one fits your use case.
We carry both at Total Appearance and have installed hundreds of each. Here's the honest breakdown.
A.R.E. Truck Caps
A.R.E. (Acme Research and Engineering) has been building truck caps since 1964. They're known for a few things:
- Build quality — A.R.E. caps have a reputation for tight fit, solid construction, and attention to detail
- Wide model range — from the basic DX model to the fully-loaded CX Series with power rear window and dome lighting
- Color matching — A.R.E. does custom color matching well, important if you want the cap to blend seamlessly with your truck
- Warranty — strong warranty coverage and dealer support
A.R.E. tends to be the choice for buyers who want a clean OEM-style look and aren't cutting corners on materials.
Leer Truck Caps
Leer is one of the highest-volume topper brands in North America and they've earned that position by offering solid products at accessible price points.
- Value — Leer generally comes in at a lower price point than comparable A.R.E. models
- Availability — Leer makes caps for nearly every truck on the market, and lead times are typically shorter
- Functional models — the 100XR and 180 are popular with contractors and weekend adventurers who need the utility without the premium price
- Familiar look — if you've seen a truck cap in a parking lot in Atlanta, there's a good chance it's a Leer
How to Choose
- Want the sharpest fit and finish, willing to pay for it? → A.R.E.
- Need it fast and want solid value? → Leer
- Contractor or work use? → Either works. Leer 100XR is a workhorse. A.R.E. DX is too.
- Weekend camping/overlanding build? → Look at A.R.E.'s Z Series or Leer's 180 — both have features built for that lifestyle
